Introduction - Presentation

The Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering Laboratory covers the educational and research needs, at undergraduate and postgraduate level, of the Department of Civil Engineering as well as other departments of Democritus University of Thrace or other Universities, as appropriate, in a wide range of subjects of Geotechnical Engineering. Also, the laboratory provides research and consulting services to third parties on issues that fall within the scope of Geotechnical Engineering and periodically collaborates with educational institutions and/or research centers in Greece and abroad, as well as with public, local government and private sector services or bodies within the framework of common goals and activities.

Field of Research

The research activity of the Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering Laboratory focuses on the following areas: 1. Ground investigation, laboratory determination of the hydraulic and mechanical behavior of soils under static and dynamic loading conditions – seismic response of soil formations and influence of local soil conditions, 2. Simulation of the mechanical and seismic behavior of soils, 3. Improvement – reinforcement methods of soil and rock formations, 4. Geosynthetic materials, 5. Stability analysis of natural and artificial slopes and retaining structures, 6. Analysis and design of foundations for technical projects, 7. Soil-structure interaction under static and dynamic loads, 8. Dynamic / seismic behavior of soils, foundations and geotechnical structures, 9. Instrumentation and experimental study of the response of soil – foundation – structure systems in the field and laboratory.
