Laboratory of Fluid Dynamics and Hydrodynamic Machines

The of Laboratory of Fluid Dynamics and Hydrodynamic Machines conducts research in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), aerodynamics, heat transfer and thermofluids combining advanced numerical simulations with experimental investigations. Its activities include the analysis of incompressible and compressible flows, turbulence and transition modeling, aerodynamic measurements, thermal management and energy systems. The laboratory employes state-of-the-art computational tools including commercial and open-source CFD software with dedicated experimental facilities. Emphasis is given on the development of advanced numerical methodologies, AI-assisted CFD analysis, innovative flow control techniques and the optimization of aerospace and energy-related engineering systems.

Introduction - Presentation

The of Laboratory of Fluid Dynamics and Hydrodynamic Machines conducts research in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), aerodynamics, heat transfer and thermofluids combining advanced numerical simulations with experimental investigations. Its activities include the analysis of incompressible and compressible flows, turbulence and transition modeling, aerodynamic measurements, thermal management and energy systems. The laboratory employes state-of-the-art computational tools including commercial and open-source CFD software with dedicated experimental facilities. Emphasis is given on the development of advanced numerical methodologies, AI-assisted CFD analysis, innovative flow control techniques and the optimization of aerospace and energy-related engineering systems.

Field of Research

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and simulation of complex incompressible and compressible flow fields. Turbulence and boundary-layer modeling under laminar-to-turbulent transition conditions. Development of advanced turbulence models and CFD algorithms (RANS, LES, and hybrid methodologies). Integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques for CFD post-processing, data analysis, and computational acceleration. Experimental aerodynamic measurements on airfoils, wings, and aerodynamic bodies. Aerodynamics and development of innovative flow control techniques (DBD plasma actuators, riblets, and tubercles) for aircraft and wind turbines. Thermal management and thermo-fluid analysis of advanced aircraft propulsion systems. Experimental and computational investigation of heat exchangers and heat transfer systems. Thermodynamic analysis, design, and optimization of aircraft propulsion systems and energy systems.
