Ecology and Environmental Remote Sensing

The Ecology and Environmental Remote Sensing Laboratory conducts interdisciplinary research at the interface of forest ecology, fire ecology, and geospatial technologies. The laboratory focuses on understanding the structure, dynamics, functioning, and resilience of forest and natural ecosystems under the influence of environmental change, land-use pressures, and wildfire disturbances. Research activities include the assessment of forest composition and biodiversity, vegetation monitoring, fuel characterization, wildfire risk analysis, fire behavior modeling, post-fire ecosystem recovery, and climate change impacts on terrestrial ecosystems. Advanced remote sensing techniques utilizing satellite, airborne, UAV, and LiDAR data are integrated with field measurements, GIS, and spatial modeling approaches to support ecosystem monitoring, environmental assessment, and evidence-based management. Through the development and application of innovative geospatial methodologies, the laboratory contributes to sustainable forest management, wildfire prevention and mitigation, biodiversity conservation, and the protection of ecosystem services at local, regional, and Mediterranean scales.
